NBC shuts down Ekiti Broadcast Service for announcing unathorised Election result

Broadcasting regulatory body in Nigeria has announced the indefinite closure of the Ekiti Broadcast Service for breaching broadcasting code.

National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, made the announcement Saturday night through its Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Armstrong Idachaba.

NBC said the radio and television stations under the umbrella of Ekiti Broadcast Service breached the Electoral Act and Broadcasting Code by allowing Governor Ayodele Fayose to announce results in favour of his deputy and flagbearer of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka.

Report from Ado-Ekiti states that Fayose announced over the radio and TV station owned and controlled by the state that PDP candidate, Kolapo Eleka, won the election, an offence punishable under electoral act.NBC shuts down Ekiti Broadcast Service

Also, NBC accused the governor of using the broadcast service to make malicious and unsubstantiated comments against the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), the police and the Department of State Services.

NBC said the Ekiti Broadcast Service is to remain shut until further notice.

Before now, the NBC had called on broadcasters in the country to adhere to the ethics of election coverage, while INEC had called on Nigerians and international communities to disregard social media results of the election.

The commission had also used its social media platforms to remind broadcasters of the shun bias and to ensure that in using political material for news, they avoid “taking inflamatory and divisive matter in its provocative form”.
