Atiku will Scrap N-Power Programme, says Chike Obi

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of PDP plans to scrap the current N-Power Programme of the All Progressive Congress (APC) if he won the 2019 Presidential Election.

According to Atiku Campaign Organisation, Nigeria doesn’t need N-Power rather a more comprehensive approach to make them self-sufficient than depending on the government, the Economic Adviser to the Organisation, Mustapha Chike-Obi, said on Sunrise Daily, Nigeria’s 24/7 news TV, Channels Television on Monday.

N-Power programme is currently engaging 500, 000 graduates under the graduate unit of the job initiative programme, which provided them with tablet devices loaded with training materials to help them deliver at their places of primary assignment.

But the Atiku Campaign Organisation believed that the N-Power can provide a permanent solution to the problem of high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.

While speaking on how the Presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, plans to tackle unemployment, Chike-Obi said:

“The reason why we say 3 millions jobs it’s because we have about 160 million people, and we are having roughly 4 million Nigerians added every year and expect 60% of them to go into the workforce.

You need to look for three million jobs roughly a year to keep the unemployment rate where it is right now not to make it more worst.

I’d have gone for five million jobs but they said we should keep it at three million, we’re saying a minimum of three millions jobs.

How Atiku presidency intends to achieve three million jobs per year if he won 2019 elections

You have to look for areas where there is scope for growth; housing: we’d create funding through guaranties of up to three trillion Naira for housing in Nigeria.

And we intend to build up to 200, 000 to 300, 000 houses in a year, that will create about 3 Million jobs.

So we’ll be focusing on housing, infrastructure, and we’ll do all of them through guaranty programmes. It’s doable”

Chike-Obi, who bagged a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from University of Lagos, was the pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, from 2010 – 2015.

AMCON was established for the purpose of efficiently resolving the non-performing loan assets of banks in Nigeria.

While some people believed he performed creditably well as the head of AMCON, which earned him several awards, he was sacked by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government in 2015, accusing him of “politicisation of AMCON” among other offences.
