Bola Tinubu Political Career
Tinubu didn’t start his life as a politician. Rather, he first worked with the likes of Arthur Andersen and GTE Services Corporation before he left the United States. When he arrived Nigeria, taking advantage of some factors, he was able to get employment with Mobil Oil Nigeria.
He ventured into politics in 1992 and was made a Senator on the platform of the Social Democratic Party(SDP). As a Senator, he represented Lagos West constituency. However, it should be noted that the elections was annulled in 1993 during the administration of late dictator Sani Abacha.
When Abacha died in 1998 and power got back to the hands of civilians, Tinubu contested for the post of the Governor of Lagos State under Alliance for Democracy(AD). He was able to win the seat, and he served as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 till 2007.
It should also be added that Tinubu was involved in a struggle with the then Federal government over if or not the State had the right to create new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to meet the needs of its large population.
Due to this, the Federal government decided to withhold funds that are meant for local councils in Lagos – a battle Tinubu eventually won (as well as his tussles with the Code of Conduct Tribunal for trial over alleged illegal operation of 16 separate foreign accounts.)
When his tenure got exhausted, unlike some others, he didn’t go for the post of a Senator, but instead strengthened himself in Lagos State to become a kingmaker who determines who rule in which office, starting from Lagos State to some western States.
Indeed, he is a feared and popular figure as far as Nigeria politics is concerning, playing a huge role in APC’s ability to snatch Federal power away from PDP in 2015. In fact, he is referred to as the most successful Lagos state politician ever, and he has been able to amass a lot of wealth for himself.
Also known as Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom in Niger State, Tinubu is someone both feared and loved by All Progressive Congress (APC), and even the opposition parties respected him
