Lusaka High Court Tuesday declared Nevers Mumba as the duly elected President of the opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), mwebantu.com reported.
The landmark judgement was presided over by Justice Sharon Newa to end the leadership crisis between Mumba and Hon. Felix Mutati.
Speaking before the judgement, MMD Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson Chisunka had said, “We now have only four Members of Parliament from the over 50 MPs that we had in 2011. To add salt to the wound, we have not participated in any by-election since 2016.”
The leadership legitimacy row in the MMD had been before the court since 2016. The party failed to field a presidential candidate in the 2016 General elections.
Originally formed to oust the previous government, MMD controlled an absolute majority in parliament between 1991 and 2001, when its past leader, Frederick Chiluba was President of Zambia.
Nevers ‘ rival Hon. Felix Mutati had not reacted to the judgement at the time of this report. Mumba was the former Vice President of Zambia.
