- Abdul and Aisha were separated after the killing of their parents
- Incest is common in Pakistan
- Sharia law in the country said being brother and sister isn’t enough reason for a divorce
It took a couple more than two decades that they are actually of the same parents in Pakistan.
Smack reported that the Pakistani couple got married 24 years ago in an arranged marriage.
It was gathered that they were separated as children after the tragic and untimely death of their parents.
They were adopted by different families after the demise of their parents until they later married each other, the truth about their generation only surfaced 24 years later.
The brother turned husband Abdul Rahim was quoted as saying, “We thought our marriage was normal, we thought we were cousins.”
The sister turned wife Aisha was emotional about her experience as she said crying, “Everybody in town knew we were brother and sister but no one had the courage to tell us until now.”
However, a prominent Anthropologist Juliane Edwards, who has studied the case of incestuous arranged marriages in Pakistan for several years wasn’t surprised.
She said, “It’s a cultural thing. When endogamous consanguineous marriages, or marriages between cousins, is socially acceptable, then marriage between siblings doesn’t seem as far-fetched,” she explained.
“I’ve repeatedly studied cases in Pakistan where widowed fathers would marry one or more of their daughters.”
Incest is said to be common in Pakistan as Juliane narrated one of such horrible situation in the country, “I’ve heard of one case where one man’s daughter was allegedly very ugly and could not find a husband, so he forced his son to marry his own sister as a punishment for being lazy.”
Last year Pakistani Federal Sharia Court threw out a case of a divorce which was instituted by a woman to allow her divorce her brother from an arranged marriage.
The presiding judge in the case stated that being siblings “was not enough of a justification” to obtain court approval for divorce under Sharia law.
There are other several situation of brothers and sister getting married across the country.
