Just In: Okonjo-Iweala Emerges WTO DG

Nigeria’s former Finance Minister Dr Ngozi Oknojo-Iweala has emerged as the new Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

She becomes the first Nigerian, African, and woman to become the DG of the trade body.

She and the South Korean trade minister Yoo Myung-hee made it to the final stage.

Ms Okonjo-Iweala and Ms Yoo both have political and international experience and both were students at American universities.

But the Nigerian ex minister got more endorsements and goodwill messages of top government officials around the world than her rival.

Ms Okonjo-Iweala, who has US national was an economist at the World Bank and later  rose to the position of managing director.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala is on the board Twitter and chair of the board of the international vaccines alliance, Gavi.

She describes trade as “a mission and a passion” when she unveils her manifesto for the top job.
