Lekki Shooting: Sanwo-Olu Should Resign Immediately – PDP

Main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the most honourable thing for Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was to resign as Lagos State Governor.

The position of the party was conveyed by its Lagos Publicity Secretary Taofik Gani, saying the people of Lagos have lost confidence in Sanwo-Olu over his role in the shooting of peaceful #EndSars protesters a few days ago at Lekki Tollgate.

The protesters stormed strategic locations in the commercial city calling on the government to address the issue of police brutality, poor governance, and end impunity by the political class.

Soldiers were drafted to Lekki Tollgate and allegedly opened fire on the protesters, unconfirmed reports say at least 10 people were killed.

The governor in a swift response in a broadcast claimed there was no fatality, his position received backlash. He later said only two people were killed.

The invasion of the protest ground continues to generate accusation and counter-accusation between Sanwo-Olu and military authority.

While he denied knowledge of the invasion, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army said they dispersed hundreds of protesters at the popular tollgate on his invitation.

Reacting, the PDP said:

“The PDP is of the view that it is more expedient for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to step aside now that the Nigerian Army has revealed him as the person who invited the soldiers to go quell the Lekki protests which have led to unfortunate fatalities and grievous injuries.

“Obviously, Lagosians can no longer trust a governor who denies his conspiracy actions in government.”

PDP said Sanwo-Olu has “no moral standing worth being proud of and he should admit this and honourably leave the stage as governor of the state.”

The governor had set up a panel to look into circumstances that led to the shooting and said he believed that the Buhari-led APC government would decisively deal with anyone found culpable.
