There were mild attacks before his appointment as the police IG, but the IPOB gunmen were more audacious during his reign.

Another security challenge he faced was the EndSars protest across Nigeria in 2020. During the protest, several police stations were burnt across Nigeria while some policemen were brutally killed by the disgruntled protesters.

Buhari’s Believed in Him:

While the attacks continued, President Muhammadu Buhari believed that Mohammed Abubakar Adamu could still fix things up.

When he attained retirement age on February 2021, instead of announcing a substantive IGP, Buhari announced extended his appointment.

Immediately Buhari made the announcement, more attacks spread across the South-East states of Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and

The last straw that broke the camel’s back was an attack by IPOB gunmen who set ablaze Police State Headquarters in Owerri and burnt Prison facility in the state, thereby setting free some criminals.

His sack while on an official visit to Imo

Disturbed by the humiliating attacks on the police facility, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu went on an operational visit to Owerri, Imo State, to access the level of damage.

While on his way back, the sack of the 20th Inspector General was announced by Buhari by the Minister of Police Affairs Maigari Dingyadi. He was replaced by  DIG Usman Alkali Baba.

Why was he sacked unceremoniously?

The was no official statement to justify his sack since the president has the power to hire and fire, but insiders say Adamu was relieved of his appointment because he had “ran out of ideas” to solve the issue of insecurity across Nigeria.

A report by Daily Trust revealed that his sacking may be attributed to his failure to disburse operation funds to police facilities across Nigeria.

Another source quoted by Sahara Reporters claimed that Mohammed Adamu was fired because he longer has what it takes to end insecurity across the country.

The source also revealed that there was a conspiracy by some police officers to sabotage Adamu since his tenure was extended by Buhari.

“The cabals are afraid secession is coming and anarchy is rising from the South. The immediate task of the new IGP will be to manage the rising insurrection in the Southern region.

“There was a conspiracy by some police officers to also sabotage Adamu into being ridiculed. He was no longer popular.

“The proximity of the prison facility and the state police headquarters that were breached in Owerri to other security agencies leaves so much to be investigated.

“The attack lasted for more than three hours and the attackers moved more than 1,000 inmates out of the vicinity without being repelled or arrested.

“That was sabotage and the Presidency was angry that Adamu could no longer manage the police,” the source was quoted as saying.

Since Adamu’s sack, Usman Alkali Baba has been in charge dousing tension in the South East
