UPDATED: Former Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Jimoh Moshood, came into the limelight in 2018 after describing Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom as a drowning man.

He was removed on January 16, 2019. He was replaced with Frank Mba, a former imager maker of NPF.

Remote cause of such utterance

Governor Ortom wasn’t happy over the killing of his people by criminals described as herdmen, which made him (Ortom) accused NPF of not taking action to prevent the menace.

His people are angry. Top Benue indigenes have threatened to recruit their own army for the purpose of protecting their people, if the Federal Government failed to come to their aid, and put an end to the carnage going on there.

Unfortunately, the people of Benue are not happy about the response of the security operatives to put them under control.

Instead of the Nigeria Police Force boss, Ibrahim Idris to visit the state to get first-hand information, he stayed in the Federal Capital Territory to claim that it’s a communal clash.

That sparked serious criticisms, and early this year (2018) over 70 people killed by the herdsmen were interred in a mass burial.

The ‘helpless’ governor called the Inspector general of Police to resign if he couldn’t provide security for the people of Benue.

To hear from the police and the government of Benue, Channels, the best tv station in Nigeria invited Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Jimoh Moshood, and the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Samuel Ortom, Mr. Terver Akase, to hear from both sides, and possibly find a way out of the destruction of lives and properties in the food basket of the nation.

The CPS maintained the stance of his boss:

“the IGP should resign if he can’t direct his men to restore peace in the state.”

In Nigeria, police is owned and controlled by the Federal Government. The IGP is appointed by the FG and takes order from it, while the IGP gives orders to all the state commissioners of police.

They report to the IGP, leaving a state governor in limbo as par security apparatus of his state.

However, governors in Nigeria like to be referred to as Chief Security Officer of their state. In reality it’s not true.

It was time for the PPRO Moshood to react to the call for the resignation of his boss. His statement can be described as the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

Instead of addressing the issue at hand, rather he said the state governor himself should resign, saying:

“It’s irresponsible of Governor Ortom to call for the resignation of the IGP. The governor should resign, if he can’t maintain law and order in his state.

And I don’t think the police force will continue to dragg issues with a drowning governor.” That was on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 (at about 9:00AM).

That statement irked CPS Akase, and the programme nearly degenerated to a confrontation between the two government officials.

The host of the programme, Maope Ogun-Yusuf of Channels intervened and threatened to discontinue the interview if both men failed to abide by the code of conduct of the programme.
