There are 221 universities in Nigeria that legitimately have the National Universities Commission (NUC) licence to operate.

Here is how the universities spread among the three major stakeholders (federal, state, and private organisation/individuals):

  1. There are 50 universities owned and managed by the federal government;
  2. 60 universities are owned by the states governments,
  3. while there are 111 private universities in Nigeria at the time of updating this article on Wednesday, April 26, 2023

What does NUC do?

National Universities Commission or NUC is the biggest parastatal or agency under Nigeria’s Ministry of Education.

It is saddled with the responsibility of accessing, inspecting, and giving approval for the establishment of high institutions in Nigeria.

The incumbent NUC Executive Secretary is Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed

Prof. Rasheed was first appointed as NUC boss on August 1, 2016, on a five-year renewable tenure. He was reappointed on August 1, 2021. His term is expected to come to an end by August 1, 2026

The NUC does not only give approval to institutions of learning and walk away, it does time to time assessment of the accredited courses to be sure that it complies with Act guiding the commencement of such course.

So, it is the NUC that is empowered to issue warming to the aspiring student about the authenticity or otherwise of a high institution in Nigeria.

Before a university could commence admission or listed by JAMB/UTME as being fit to accept students for admission, it must have passed the criteria set by the NUC.

You may want to ask…

What is NUC accreditation?

NUC accreditation is a process of evaluating the academic programmes of a high institution to be sure that they meet the global standards as endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

As earlier stated, there are some Illegal universities that are running illegal branches or study centres in Nigeria, most times, they bear “foreign” names just to make you believe that it’s global-recognized institution.

Shine your eye!

Below is a full list of universities that have the approval of the NUC. They do not only have a certificate of registration from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), they also have a certificate of operation from the National University Commission.

The federal universities are most times called public universities because they are managed by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

They receive yearly allocations from Abuja. The government is responsible for the welfare of staff members in the above universities.

As such, the Governing Council of Federal-owned universities are constituted by the Nigeria’s President. And also appoints the Chairman of Governing Council. He could hire and fire if any member is found guilty of an allegation.

Note:

You may be asking: Why does Nigeria have 60 state universities when there are 36 states?

There are some states that have two universities either to score a political point or just to have a university in their hometown.

Although most of them are unable to adequately fund or manage one university, they still went ahead to establish the second one.

The school fees of a private university is more than the federal and state combined, however, they have a smooth academic programme. Unlike the federal and state universities where unpaid salaries and workers’ welfare is an issue, owners of private universities are rigid about unionism.
