You have to link your NIN to your MTN phone number to avoid being barred from making calls. This guide covers the process of doing that and how to verify your NIN status on the MTN portal
This is very important following the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) directives to telecommunication operators in Nigeria to block SIM cards that are not connected with NIN.
Linking Your NIN with Your MTN Line
To avoid blockage, MTN on its official Twitter page released a USSD code and URL on how their customers can easily link their line to their NIN as directed by the NCC.
If you’ve misplaced the printout of the NIN given to you by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), there is an alternative to getting your 11-digit NIN, at no cost.
How to check your NIN using USSD code
- Dial *346# from the phone number associated with your voter’s card, driver’s licence, or BVN registration.
- Enter “1” to retrieve your NIN
Note: It’s advisable to take a screenshot of the NIN before it disappears so that you don’t have to dial the code a second time.
Your telecom provider charges N20 every time you dial *346#,
Although the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ibrahim Pantami, directed the NCC and the National Identity Management Commission to remove the N20 USSD fee imposed on subscribers for NIN retrieval requests, the directive was not obeyed.
How To Verify Your NIN Status On MTN Portal:
- Enter your MTN phone number at nin.mtn.ng/nin/status
- A 6-digit OTP code will be sent to you as an SMS, enter it
- And click confirm.
If it’s properly linked, you will get a successful message, “NIN is linked to your Number 08009000008.“
How To Link NIN To Your MTN Line
There are two methods to get this done on MTN:
- Via MTN-NIN Portal
- Via USSD Code
You need a Virtual National Identification Number (VNIN), the phone number you want to link, and email address
Via MTN-NIN Portal
- Step 1: Copy and paste the official registration link https://nin.mtn.ng/nin/ on your favorite browser
- Step 2: Fill in the spaces
- Step 3: Click on the submit button
- Step 4: An OTP will be sent to your MTN line
- Step 5: Enter the OTP and click confirm
That’s all! You just submitted your MTN line to be linked to your NIN
Link NIN to MTN SIM card Via USSD Code
To get started using the USSD code to link your NIN to your phone number, dial *996#
It will display the following options:
- Submit NIN/Virtual NIN (VNIN)
- Get enterprise ID
- Generate VNIN
- View NIN status
- Update SIM Info
- Link Corporate Line
- Select “4” to access two options
- Choose “1”
- If you are yet to link MTN to your NIN, you will be directed to enter your NIN 11-digit number
- Your MTN number will be linked right away and you will get a confirmation SMS. It may take a few seconds in some instances.
To check the status of your submission, dial *996# again, and choose the option “4”
“Dear Customer, NIN *7005 is linked to your Number 8034298961. Thank you“
