A few years back, global messaging app WhatsApp disclosed that it would stop supporting some phones that use old Operating System and it released years when it would stop its support for such OS

A statement from WhatsApp says: “Because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time.

“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. We recommend switching to a compatible device or saving your chat history before that date,” the message reads.

In the announcement, WhatsApp outlined the following years:

  • June 30, 2017
  • December 31, 2017
  • December 31, 2018
  • December 31, 2019
  • December 31, 2019
  • February 1, 2020
  • November 1, 2021

Some phones that will not support WhatsApp

At least four iPhones under the Apple brand will not be supported; six Huawei smartphones are affected while about 20 LG brands will stop working on WhatsApp.

Recalled that WhatsApp stopped its support for Nokia Symbian S60 on June 30, 2017, while it added BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10 to its list of OS that will not be supported on December 31, 2017.

By December 31, 2018, Nokia S40 was added while iPhone running software older than iOS 7, Android device with version 2.3.7, and Windows Phone OS stopped getting support from WhatsApp since December 31, 2019. It also added iOS 7 and Android 2.3.7 on February 1, 2020

What does this mean?

Usually, the Meta-owned messaging app rolls out list phones that will not support WhatsApp. In its last update, it disclosed that it will be incompatible with Android phones that are running on Android 4.0.3 or lower, and Apple iPhones that are running on iOS 9 or older.

This means that users of smartphones with an old operating system will have to upgrade or be shut out of the messaging app.

Recalled that in 2019, WhatsApp stated that any phone running the Windows Mobile operating system will not be supported by the end of 2019. Here is the 2021 updated list of phones that will not be supported by WhatsApp

At least 50 phones will no longer be supported by WhatsApp. It also means that future updates will no longer be available on the affected phones.
