From one-bedroom to 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom apartments, interested Nigerians can now apply for homes on the National Housing Programme (NHP) portal which was made public on Friday, November 12, 2021, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The core mandate of the NHP is to address the housing challenges faced by millions of Nigerians to own affordable houses. NHP is under the Ministry of Works and Housing

During the launch, the minister, Babatunde Raji Fashola disclosed that “We currently have over 5,000 units at different stages of completion. The houses range from one, two, and three semi-detached bungalows and one- to three-bedroom flats”.

The 5,000 housing units were completed in the 34 states and the FCT while Lagos State had yet to provide the Federal Government with the land. Rivers State is expected to join in the third phase of the project.

Conditions of application

1) To apply for the National Housing programme, it’s important to know what it entails, here are some of them:

The federal government will appoint maintenance and facilities managers in all the estates

Application requirements

Here are the requirements for the National Housing Programme

1) Digital copy of your most recent passport photograph which must be in JPEG or PNG format

2) You must have the most current PDF format of Tax Clearance or Pay Slip

3) A digital copy of means of Identification which must be in PEG or PNG format. Acceptable IDs are: (Voters’ Card, National ID, Drivers licences, or International passport.

4) If you’re a mortgage subscriber, you need a letter of recommendation from any Primary Morgage Bank

5) Evidence of 10percent initial deposit, this applies to Mortgage Subscribers only. If you’re making outright payment, you only need evidence of payment.

National Housing Programme Application process

To be one of the beneficiaries of the federal government homes and property, carefully follow the step by step guide below:

1) Visit the home page for the federal homes dubbed federal housing programme portal at: nhp.worksandhousing.gov.ng

2) Locate the location or state where you want your home, the number o rooms you want, and click on the “apply” button to register an account as a first timer

3) Check your inbox for a validation code to verify your email, enter the code and click “verify email”

Note: It may take up to nine hours for you to get the validation code.

4) Fill the online application form

5) Make a payment of NGN10,000 application fee after submitting your application.

6) The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing will review your application and send you a notification if your application is successful. This is when a payment authorization for the desired property would be sent to you

7) Make outright payment for your desired property. Alternatively, speak to the accredited Primary Mortgage Bank (PMB) for payment of the property

8) Wait for your Letter of allocation. It’s a buy and pack in

9) Upon complication of your application, you can visit the your portal on the National Housing Programme to check the status of your application. It contains 1) My application, 2) profile, 3) payment history, and logout option

A year after assuming office in 2016, Muhammadu Buhari-led government budgeted N35.6bn for the National Housing Programme after the government resolved that there was the need to design a housing model that would best suit the cultural diversities of Nigeria

By November 2016, the Ministry f Works and Housing awarded N27,448,884,281.64 worth of contracts to 542 contractors to construct 2,736 housing units in categories of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, and condominiums comprising of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments nationwide.
