In the first round of the election, Ademola of PDP led by a margin of 353 votes and INEC declared the election as inconclusive.

Why Did INEC Declare 2018 Osun Governorship Election Inconclusive?

INEC declared Osun 2018 governorship election inconclusive because Ademola’s margin (353 votes) of victory was smaller than the number of cancelled votes in seven polling units.

In essence, an election would be declared inconclusive if the number of cancelled votes is more than the margin of votes secured by the winner

The electoral umpire declared the election is inconclusive on September 23, 2018, and announced a rerun for September 27, 2018, in some wards. The outcome of the rerun is as follows:

  • Ward 10 in Polling Unit 2 in Ife North (APC: 126; PDP: 2)
  • Ward 7 Polling Unit 8 in Ife South (APC: 455; PDP: 36)
  • Ward 8 Polling Unit 9 in Orolu LGA (APC: 280; PDP: 122)
  • Ward 5 Polling Unit 17 in Osogbo LGA (APC: 299; PDP: 165)

Major contenders in the 2018 Osun Gubernatorial election:

  1. Alh. Gboyega Oyetola (Chief of Staff to Aregbesola at the time): APC
  2. Senator Ademola Adeleke: PDP
  3. Moshood Adeoti (Secretary to Osun State State Government): Action Democratic Party (ADP)
  4. Senator Iyiola Omisore: PDP

The Politicking That Followed the 2018 Osun Governorship Rerun

Two of the polling units where elections were cancelled – Ife North and Ife South – were strongholds of former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Sen. Iyiola Omisore.

Omisore was a major contender under PDP, he decamped to the SDP because he was unable to secure the ticket of his former party (PDP). The party’s heavyweights prefer Ademola, leading to his (Omisore) exit from the PDP.

APC on the other hand who knew what the rerun meant for the party constituted a powerful committee comprising:

Adams Oshiomhole

Abdullahi Ganduje

Abiola Ajimobi

Ibikunle Amosun

Lai Mohammed

Kayode Fayemi and other powerful party men within and outside the state persuaded Omisore of SDP to ‘step down’ for Oyetola in the rerun.

From the two areas in Ife, 1,667 votes were at stake, the reason for the alliance. The alliance didn’t come without juicy benefits for Omisore which were not made public but comprises were made.

After the rerun, Ademola of PDP garnered 255,023 while his rival Oyetola of APC got 255,505. Oyetola was declared the winner of the controversial election. It remained one of the controversial elections in Nigeria since 1999. In a statement, PDP said Adeleke won the election.
