Gbemisola Ruqayyah Saraki is a former Minister of State for Transportation during Buhari’s administration. She was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on 21st August 2019.

She was a former senator under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party who was elected to represent the Kwara central senatorial district in the year 2003.

Prior to that, she was elected into the House of Representatives in 1999 representing Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency, Kwara State.

She’s the sister to Former Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (8th Assembly), Bukola Saraki.

How Gbemisola Saraki started off

Gbemisola attended the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics. She had her mandatory national service at the Nigeria Bank for Commerce and Industry, Lagos.

She had worked for the Societe Generale Bank (Nigeria) as the Head of Money Markets and later as Head of Domiciliary Accounts. She was Executive Director of Ashmount Insurance Brokers, Lagos from 1994-1999.

Her father, Abubakar Olusola Saraki, was a leading senator of the Second Nigerian Republic (1979–1983) and father of politics in Kwara State. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, her brother, was governor of Kwara State, Nigeria from May 29, 2003-May 29, 2011 and was the President of the Senate (8th Senate) in Nigeria.

Gbemisola Saraki’s husband was Architect Olusegun Fowora whom she married in 1990. They are now divorced, but the marriage is blessed with two children: a boy and a girl.

Her daughter Tiwalola Oyinkansola Fowora was born in 1991, while her son Olaotan Fowora was born in 1995.

Her husband is the Executive Chairman of Primi Construction, a registered Nigerian Construction Company with an operational history spanning 17 years.

Political Career.

Gbemisola R. Saraki was a member of the All People’s Party (APP) from where she was elected as a member of the House of Representatives in 1999.

Later in 2003, she contested under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) for the senate and won the seat, representing the Central Senatorial District of Kwara State.

In 2007, she re-contested again and won, with that, she served as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for eight years (2003-2011).

She relinquished her senatorial seat in 2011 to contest the gubernatorial election of Kwara State under the ACPN party. This time, she lost to the PDP’s Abdul Fatah Ahmed.

As a legislator from 2003-2011, she was a full-time member of several committees. From 2007-2011 at the senate, Gbemisola headed the Senate Committee on National Planning, Poverty Alleviation, and Economic Affairs.

She also acted in the senate committee as the Vice-Chairperson on Foreign Affairs. Gbemisola was also a returning member of the ECOWAS Parliament.

How Gbemisola Saraki defected from PDP to APC

On the eve of the 2015 presidential election, Gbemisola Saraki defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She was later appointed by President Muhammed Buhari as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State in February 2016.

On February 13 2017, Gbemisola was also appointed as a part of the 16-member committee to re-negotiate its 2009 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

President Muhammadu Buhari went on to appoint her as the Minister of State for Transportation on August 21, 2019.

Senator Gbemisola Saraki, the ex-Minister of State for Transportation, is an intellectual thinker, a strong and intelligent politician swimming in the world of developmental ideas.

Being fascinated in February 2020, she held egg heads at the University of Ilorin Post Graduate school where she presented a speech on youth participation and inclusion in politics.

Between Gbemisola and Bukola, who is older?

Gbemi as she is fondly called is the younger sister of the former Senate President. While Bukola Saraki was born on May 3, 1965, Bukola, a former governor of the state was born on December 19, 1962.

    She is nice and very hard working woman like her father.. But to me she is not complete without a notable man by her side, and she is still young.. Her letter if address says divorce, honestly with her personality, she is not complete without been a Mrs in this kids of office/ appointment..
    Therefore. May chose to add this my comment here that I am interested to be the most previous companion to her as I am very available too..
    She is still young and I think I will be good to be forever life partner/ husband..
    Is my earnestly interest to be her companion..
