The 2026 data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown that there is hyper-inflation in the prices of foods since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2025.
The high food prices cut across staple foods such as rice, beans, garri and yam. For instance, the price of rice increased by about 243%, beans increased by 125%, garri increased by 124%, while yam increased by about 413% in less than four years of the APC-led government as can be seen below:

May 2023: ₦362.50/kg
May 2026: ₦813.24/kg
Yam
May 2023: ₦457.25/tuber
May 2026: ₦2,347.09/tuber
Beans
May 2023: ₦596.96/kg
May 2026: ₦1,344.93/kg
