ABU Suspends Implementation of Revised 2026/2027 Student Charges

The Management of Ahmadu Bello University has suspended the implementation of the recently revised student charges for 2026/2027 academic session, pending further consultations with the students and other relevant stakeholders.

The management of the institution announced the suspension in a bulletin published on its site and circulated on social media handles on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

ABU had on Monday, October 5, 2026, published an upward review of tuition fees for 2026/2027 academic session, which showed more than 100% increment in student charges effective 2026/2027 session. The publication has been retracted.

The review had generated widespread complaints among students and other stakeholders within the institution and across Nigeria.

Why we increased 2026/2027 tuition fee – ABU

Justifying the reason for the upward review, the Management of the institution stated that it became necessary considering a huge “gap between available resources and the rising cost of providing essential services to our students.”

ABU said there was need to expand it revenue generation following the burden it incurred after the loss of nearly N2.5 billion court ruling in May 2026, stating it “has placed considerable additional pressure on the University’s finances and has further constrained its capacity to sustain and improve essential services.”

It said the Student Representative Council (SRC) presented Management with additional observations, concerns and requests arising from their further consideration of the revised charges.

Management has carefully considered their submissions during the meeting with management and found them to be legitimate, responsible and deserving of further considerations.

In the spirit of consultation, mutual respect and responsible governance, Management has therefore decided to suspend the implementation of the revised charges to allow for wider consultations and further inputs from the student body and other relevant stakeholders.

Management particularly appreciates the mature, responsible and constructive manner in which the students have approached the matter. The University considers such engagement an important expression of responsible citizenship and a demonstration that difficult institutional challenges can be addressed through dialogue, mutual understanding and shared responsibility. However, due to complaints from our well-meaning students through their respected SRC Presidents, the management has invited the Leadership of the SRC to discuss the issues and get to understand the sources and nature of their complaints.

Let it be clearly understood that the decision to suspend implementation is a demonstration of Management’s commitment to listening to its students and ensuring that decisions with significant implications for them receive the fullest possible consideration.

At the same time, Management remains mindful of the financial realities confronting the University and the urgent need to strengthen the resources available for the delivery of essential services. The University must therefore continue to seek a sustainable balance between the legitimate concerns of students and the resources required to provide them with a conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and personal development.

Management wishes to reiterate its unwavering commitment to the welfare of all students. Every effort will continue to be made to ensure that the University’s limited resources are deployed responsibly, transparently and in ways that produce the greatest possible benefit to the student community.

The University therefore appeals for continued patience, understanding and cooperation from the students as the consultation process proceeds. The management also encourages students to continue their academic activities and have confidence in the ability of their SRC and management to sit together to resolve the issues.

Management is confident that, through constructive engagement and a shared commitment to the University’s future, a responsible and sustainable resolution can be reached.

The Management promised to “communication on the outcome of the consultations and the next steps will be issued in due course.”
