A 32-year-old Nigerian man, Olusegun Adejorin, may be sentenced to 100 years in prison in the United States for a $7.5 million wire fraud.

He was found guilty of five counts bordering on wire fraud, each carrying a maximum of 20 years, a maximum of five years for unauthorised access to a protected computer, and a mandatory two years, consecutive to any other sentence imposed, for aggravated identity theft, prosecutors said.

He was found guilty of carrying out a fraud scheme that targeted two charitable organisations in the U.S. between June and August 2020.

A statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland disclosed that Adejorin also defrauded another charitable organisation in New York by gaining access to employee email accounts and impersonating staff to induce fraudulent financial transactions.

How Olusegun Adejorin perpetrated the fraud

Revealing how the fraudster carried out the scam, prosecutors disclosed that he registered spoofed domain names, which he used to impersonate employees of the New York–based charity, and then requested withdrawals of the organisation’s funds held by the Maryland-based charity.

He fraudulently obtained access to the Maryland charity’s email accounts and used them to send emails falsely confirming fraudulent requests made in the New York charity’s name.

It was revealed that he obtained more than $7.5 million from his victims, the New York-based charity and the Maryland-based charity.

The Attorney’s Office said a federal district judge would determine sentencing after considering the U.S. sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

US District Judge Theodore Chuang will deliver the landmark sentence on April 10, 2026, which could see Olusegun Adejorin jailed for up to 100 years.

The crook was extradited from Ghana to face charges in the United States. He is not the only Nigerian who has recently been caught, prosecuted and jailed in recent times.

A Nigerian pastor, Edward Oluwasanmi, and his colleague, a top-ranking traditional ruler in Nigeria from Osun State, Joseph Olugbenga Oloyede, were also sentenced.
