The six governors in the Southwest geopolitical zone are currently meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, amid rising insecurity across the country, especially the mass abductions in schools and churches.
Infomedia Nigeria gathered that five governors – Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State – as well as the Deputy Governor of Osun State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who is also the host, are in attendance.
Although the spate of mass abductions by bandits and terrorists is most rampant in the Northern region, the insecurity has spread to Kwara State, which shares boundaries with three states in the Southwest – Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti.
While the purpose of the meeting had not been made public at the time of publication, insiders say it is aimed at strengthening security across the region.
Last week, more than 30 members of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, were abducted, while 25 schoolchildren were kidnapped in Kebbi State. A few days later, more than 300 schoolchildren were mass abducted at a Catholic school in Niger State.
