Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, where Nigerians can find their exact house or location code, has been launched to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

What is National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode?

It is a precise digital address for every building in Nigeria, with a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled, building-level address system to allocate an 11-character code to all Nigerian homes.

What does it mean?

Every home in Nigeria has now been assigned a digital 11-character code. The new 11 characters automatically replace the old six-digit numerical codes and generic postcodes used by Nigerians.

This means that every Nigerian home with an address now has its own digital code. Houses without an address can either submit their exact address to the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) or use the nearby postcodes around them temporarily.

How to get the postcode for your house via the Digital Postcode System

  • Copy and paste the Digital Postcode System URL, postcode.gov.ng/, into your browser or download the app from your favourite app store.
  • Enable Google Location on your device.
  • Click “Find my Postcode.”
  • Allow the app to load your address. It will show your exact location address and other nearby postcodes.
  • An example is KD 19 A14 KN 06.

Interpreting the code

The first two letters represent the state, e.g. KD means Kaduna State.

Benefits

For security response time: It improves emergency response. With it, security personnel who are on a rescue mission and need backup can use it to send their exact location to the backup team, thereby strengthening public security.

Ease e-commerce logistics: SMEs can use it to share their exact location with prospective buyers, thereby making it easier for couriers and delivery riders to navigate directly to a precise building rather than relying on generic Google Maps.

It boosts KYC: Knowing Your Customer goes beyond facial recognition, but also includes the exact physical address. The new National Digital Postcode System now simplifies the process of KYC, as financial institutions and other bodies that require KYC can use the digital postcode to verify specific physical locations for identity authentication, credit checks, and service planning.

Background

On June 15, 2026, the Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, convened a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop, which brought together security stakeholders, including representatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), law enforcement agencies and emergency response institutions, among others.

Themed “Operationalising the Nigerian Digital Postcode for National Security and Public Safety,” the workshop centred on the imperative of providing every location in Nigeria with a unique and verifiable digital address to improve public service delivery, strengthen national security, enhance emergency response capabilities, and support economic activities that rely on accurate location intelligence.

Speaking at the workshop, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, described the system as a foundational layer of digital public infrastructure.

“The Nigerian Digital Postcode System is a foundational layer of Digital Public Infrastructure that will strengthen coordination, intelligence, enforcement, and service delivery across the country,” Bosun Tijani said.

Use new digital postcodes – Tijani Urges Nigerians

The launch, which coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day anniversary, saw Bosun Tijani, in a post on X, urge Nigerians to find and begin using their postcodes.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity.

“As we work towards (President Bola Tinubu’s) ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Tijani said.
