The NDE is a federal agency under the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Nigeria. It was established by the military regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida through Decree No. 24 of 1989 to formulate policies aimed at reducing unemployment among the teeming Nigerian youth.
Although the agency’s role in delivering its core objectives has been on and off over the years, the federal government recently seems to have rejigged the NDE back into its founding mission. It now trains unemployed Nigerians in skill acquisition across its centres nationwide upon successful registration and shortlisting for the programmes.
Training programmes of NDE:
The directorate runs what it calls the Rural Employment Promotion (REP) programme, which targets participants whose ages range between 18 and 50 years, varying by scheme. The available schemes are:
- Livestock Training Scheme (LSTS)
- Aquaculture Production Training Scheme (ACPTS)
- Crop Production Training Scheme (CPTS)
- Katsina Date Production Scheme (Only for Katsina State)
