Tether Awards $200,000 Grant to BTCPay Server Foundation in 2 Years

Barely a year after awarding a $100,000 grant to BTCPay, Tether, the largest company in the digital asset industry, has again extended another $100,000 to the BTCPay Server Foundation.

Recall that Tether first awarded $100K to BTCPay on April 2, 2024. Today, Thursday, May 8, 2025, the company announced another $100K grant, bringing the total to $200K in two years, as it continues to reinforce its commitment to the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement.

The grant is part of Tether’s ongoing effort to support genuine firms building infrastructure for financial freedom in the payments landscape.

BTCPay is a non-custodial invoicing system that simplifies the use of crypto as a means of payment by eliminating third-party involvement. Payments via BTCPay go directly to the user’s wallet, thereby increasing both privacy and security.

The BTCPay Server is a self-hosted, open-source cryptocurrency payment processor that empowers thousands of businesses, projects, and communities worldwide to accept Bitcoin and USD₮ payments.

Tether, in a statement on Thursday, said it recognises the fact that the development of BTCPay software “keeps the system up-to-date and compatible with cutting-edge technology such as the Lightning Network, which extends the practical use of Bitcoin even further.”

Tether, through its CEO Paolo Ardoino, stated that the 2025 grant builds on the foundation laid by the 2024 contribution, enabling the BTCPay Server Foundation to continue expanding its development efforts, “improve usability, and strengthen the privacy-focused payment platform.

“By supporting their work, we advance a vision of borderless payments and open-source innovation.”

Tether says it continues to recognise FOSS’s vital role in democratizing access to critical technologies and shaping the future of decentralized finance.

Other projects that have received Tether’s support include:

  • Holepunch, a fully encrypted platform for building peer-to-peer applications;
  • Keet, a free peer-to-peer instant messaging application that works without the need for centralized entities on any device;
  • Wallet Development Kit, an open-source, modular software development kit designed to empower businesses and developers to seamlessly integrate non-custodial wallets and user experiences for USD₮ and Bitcoin into any app, website, or device.

Each project contributes to a global infrastructure that is more equitable, resilient, and user-empowered.

Commenting, Rockstar Dev, a founding member of BTCPay Server, said the second “grant to BTCPay Server Foundation reaffirms a commitment to decentralized payments. It gives us, the FOSS contributors that are part of the Foundation, the ability to keep building open-source tools that empower anyone, anywhere, to accept Bitcoin, unhindered by geographic or financial barriers.”

Tether promised that it will continue to support FOSS pioneers whose technologies promote privacy, independence, and universal access to digital assets, in order to advance the digital ecosystem as a thought leader.
