Bitget is a cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2018 in Singapore. The exchange completed its registration in on November 22, 2022, in the crypto-friendly environment of Seychelles under the country’s International Business Companies Act 2016 to establish a decentralised operational framework.

History

Bitget began in 2018 as a crypto derivatives and copy trading company and then moved to establish its global presence in countries that are crypto-friendly, choosing Seychelles as its first frontier in December 2022 under Gracy Chen as the firm’s Managing Director. She had earlier being appointed as MD in June 2022.

In 2023, the country made significant progress in its global expansion. For instance, it raised US$10 million from venture capital firm Dragonfly in April 2023.

Appointment of Gracy Chen as the CEO

On May 21, 2024, Bitget crypto exchange appointed Gracy Chen as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). By December 2024, Bitget obtained a Bitcoin service provider license from the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador, a country that prides itself as the Bitcoin capital.

Hack

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Bitget was hacked, during which the attackers stole $387.5 from hot and warm wallets. The company assured customers that their wallets were compromised, stating that Bitget has $464 million as a User Protection Fund, enough to cover the loss.

Regulatory concerns

Bitget has faced several regulatory issues, especially in Europe and Asia, including Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, and Turkey, among others in issues related to non-compliance.

For instance, the French Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) placed Bitget on its blacklist in November 2023 for non-compliance, warning the public that the crypto exchange was not authorised to provide digital asset services in France. In March 2026, the crypto exchange withdrew its services from France. But the AMF removed Bitget from its crypto asset blacklist on July 9, 2026.

Entry into football sponsorship

In September 2021, the crypto exchange committed millions of Euros to sponsor Italian football club Juventus for €5.5 million for the 2021/2022 and €7 million for the 2022/2023 football season.

In 2022, Bitget and Lionel Messi signed an MoU, making the football star becoming its global brand ambassador. The partnership ended in December 2025.

Again in 2024, Bitget announced a multi-year agreement with LaLiga.  The company has also donated to courses.
