The CEO of Bitget Gracy Chen has revealed how hackers allegedly from Lazarus Group compromised the official Twitter account of a major crypto media outlet.
Her revelation followed a major hack on Bitget wallets on Thursday, September 24, 2026, where $387.5 in crypto assets were stolen. North Korea-based, Lazarus Group, has been accused for the attack.
According to her in an interview published a crypto news platform, Wu Blockchain, the attackers impersonated a journalist to reach out to her, communicated with her assistant and PR team via Telegram, through which they built credibility.
Below is the verbatim transcription of the interview:
“I personally face the Lazarus group directly about one and a half year ago when my own Metamask wallet which where I lost about 80,000 worth of Ethereum or coins and some other cryptocurrencies at least through that incident that I personally faced.
“I know how they kind of hacked or social engineer etc. So the method that they did that time is number one social engineering they pretended to be a former journalist. So they obviously know that I take a lot of interviews and public meetings like this.
“So they pretended to be a journalist from one major cryptocurrency media and they actually somehow hacked into their account into this official media’s Twitter account and sent me a direct message asking me to do an interview with them.
“So that’s the first step basically social engineering and they also did have a full conversation with my PR and my then assistant. So everything looks so real, right?
“It’s totally a real journalist that they pretend to be. And they hacked that journalist telegram and used that telegram to communicate with my assistant for example how Gracie is going to take this interview, what are we going to talk about etc.
“And then during the interview we just used normal Zoom platform that interview and still they hacked me. I think the method that they are using is very sophisticated.
“So I think like right now there are still things or attacks targeting to crypto industry every day and exchanges I’m one of the major groups of victims because we do have a lot of money that is worth targeting. So even me personally that they’ve targeted.”
Social engineering is a manipulative tactic where attackers impersonate trusted individuals or entities to gain access and deceive their targets in order to steal money or vital security information from them.
