The Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning is among the unstable ministries in Nigeria with different administrations either merging or carving it from the Ministry of Finance.
For instance, there was a Ministry of Budget and Panning between 1999 to 2019, but Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency merged it with the Ministry of Finance in 2019 with the name Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning.
But on assumption of office President Bola Tinubu made Finance a stand-alone ministry while Budget and Economic Planning is a separate ministry
So, some of the agencies hitherto under the Ministry of Finance are now under the re-established Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. They are
Debt Management Office (DMO)
To coordinate the management of Nigeria’s foreign and internal debt
Centre for Management Development
To drive the vision of the developmental policies of the Federal Government
Budget Office of the Federation
To monitor budget implementation and fiscal policies of the Federal Government
Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research
To provide information on economic and social ideas for Nigeria’s economy
A former governor of Kebbi State (2015-2023) and senator (2009-2015) Abubakar Bagudu is the incumbent Minister of Budget and Economic Planning.
