A member of Nigeria’s political movement has exposed a plan by a perceived opportunist to use the Obidient Movement to launch a memecoin, $OBICOIN, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a now-viral tweet on X, Morris Monye, a supporter of Peter Obi—the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) during the 2023 elections—shared a message he received from an unidentified supporter of the movement. The message detailed an attempt to capitalize on Obi’s popularity to launch what is being called the Obidient Movement Coin.
“Obidient Movement Crypto Coin is out, $OBICOIN: Powering a new era of grassroots momentum. $OBICOIN is the first community-driven token inspired by the revolutionary Obidient Movement that energized Nigerian politics,” the message reads.

Monye, who warned against the plan, urged other supporters of Peter Obi not to patronize any memecoin that may be listed on crypto exchanges.
The Ideals of the Obidient Movement
The Obidient Movement is a new generation of youths who yearn for political and leadership change in Nigeria, rallying behind Peter Obi in the 2023 elections. Obi, a former governor of Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria, was the LP’s presidential candidate during the election.
Although Obi did not win the election—placing third after Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, according to results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—the movement has remained a significant force in Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, the influence of the Obidient Movement continues to grow.
The Craze for Memecoins
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency created to follow trends, employ humor, and build a sense of community to attract users. Also known as shitcoins, some of these tokens hold little to no value, while others are launched by celebrities using pump-and-dump tactics, causing thousands of buyers to lose their investments.
The first memecoin, Dogecoin, was launched in 2013 by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a joke. Other examples include Fartcoin and $DAVIDO, launched by Nigerian singer David Adeleke popularly known as Davido. Since then, several memecoins have emerged, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, who launched $TRUMP on January 19, 2025.
Following Trump’s move, his wife, Melania Trump, introduced $Melania, fueling the trend. In February 2025, the President of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, took a similar step by launching a national memecoin, $CAR.
Peter Obi’s Supporters Urged to Stay Away from $OBICOIN
In the meantime, supporters have been urged to avoid buying into $OBICOIN, as all signs suggest it could be another scheme that leads to financial losses.
One user tweeted:
“Stay awake, guys! A lot of people took advantage of the Obidient Movement during the 2022–2023 pre-election period. It shouldn’t happen again. Expose those criminals!” – Omega X D
Another experienced crypto trader, who is not a fan of memecoins, concluded that such tokens are often scams:
“Unless you’re new to crypto, you should know that meme coins are scams. Some people still invest, hoping to pull out before they get rugged.”
Obi’s supporters are also calling on the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate to issue a formal statement disowning the coin. No official statement had been released at the time of publication.
