The increasing popularity of crypto games on Telegram has become a sort of incentive for users on a messaging app across the world.
In an update on his channel, founder and CEO of the app, Pavel Durov, announced that Telegram now has 950 million monthly active users, up from 900 million in the spring, setting its eyes on 1 billion users.
“Telegram reached 950 million monthly active users — up from 900 million in the spring. On track for ONE BILLION,” stating that, “ We’re proud that Telegram is at the epicenter of this societal transformation,” Durov said on his channel.
Notcoin (NOT) sparked telegram-based gaming in 2024, whereby players tap to earn in-game coins with the promise of future crypto rewards. It attracted millions of crypto enthusiasts, who wanted to convert their virtual coins into NOT tokens on The Open Network (TON).
By May 2024 NOT token was officially launched, making it the biggest gaming token event of the year, thanks to support from major exchanges such as Binance and OKX.
TON is a blockchain system initially developed by Telegram but later handed over to outside developers as an open-source project.
As those who took advantage of the Notcoin game were celebrating their gains, another in-app crypto game, Hamster Kombat, came on board and it gained widespread popularity within a short time.
With its engaging gameplay and various reward options, the Kombat game has more than 100 million combined subscribers and followers on its various channels, including Telegram and YouTube among others and with more than 250 million players around the world.
Existing users of Telegram can play while first-timer user is expected to download the messaging app to join the trend.
The success of Notcoin and Hamster Kombat, which is currently warming up to list on major exchanges, have inspired other Telegram-based crypto games such as Catizen, Yescoin, and TapSwap planning to launch their cryptocurrencies on TON.
The elated Telegram founder had earlier stated that “2024 will go down in history as the year when hundreds of millions of people became familiar with blockchain.”
He promised to introduce a mini app store and an in-app browser with support for Web3-pages, saying efforts are in top gear to make Telegram a safe platform for all, “We will also step up our efforts to fight the scammers seeking to defraud new entrants into the crypto realm.”
