The grading system in Nigerian secondary schools may not be the same as it is in the UK, United States and other countries around the world. In this post, you’ll see the SUBEB grading system in Nigeria.
Grading in education is the process of applying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course.
However, every country tries as much as possible to implement the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) stipulated standard.
In this post, we’ll tell you SUBEB approved grading system in Nigerian secondary schools.
First…
What is SUBEB in Nigeria?
SUBEB means State Universal Basic Education Board. It’s an offshoot of the Federal Government’s Universal Basic Education (UBE) to enhance the efficiency of education standards in Nigeria.
So, all 36 states in Nigeria including the FCT have their own education board to adequately implement education policies in their jurisdiction. SUBEB also have its grading system.
“State Universal Primary Education Board (SUBEB), an offshoot of UBEC in the states, is established to address the inequality in educational opportunity at the basic level and improving the quality of its provision.
“The programme was introduced by the Federal government to remove distortions and inconsistencies in basic education delivery and reinforce the implementation of the National Policy on Education as well as to ensure access, equity and quality of basic education throughout the country.”– Adetoun & Kolawole
Osun State, South-West, Nigeria under the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola started the use of Grade in the state a few years back.
So, one might want to ask…
What is Grade 12 equivalent in Nigeria?
That’s simple, though it could be confusing to someone who isn’t familiar with the foreign standard of education.
The simple explanation goes thus:
Pupils spend six years in Primary School (Pry 1 to Pry 6), which some people prefer to call elementary education.
Objectives of primary education in Nigeria
“Primary education should provide the learner with opportunities to: acquire literacy, numeracy, creativity and communication skills. enjoy learning and develop the desire to continue learning.”
This is followed by six years of secondary school: three years in Junior Secondary School (JSS1, JSS2 and JSS3)
Meaning:
- JSS1=Grade 7;
- JSS2=8th Grade
- 9th Grade=JSS3.
The rest is three-year in Senior Secondary School, consisting of SS I, SS 2, and SS 3
Meaning:
- SS 1= 10th Grade
- SS 2= 11th Grade
- SS 3= 12th Grade.
Two grading systems used for students in Nigeria :
- SUBEB grading system
- WAEC grading system in Nigeria
SUBEB Grading System
SUBEB grading system is used for students in secondary schools (JSS 1-SSS3). This grading system depends on the score and performance of the students in internal examinations conducted by the school, or by the state.
This is the SUBEB Approved grading system: Score, Interpretation, and Grade
SCORE (%) | INTERPRETATION | GRADE |
70 and above | Excellent | A |
69-60 | Very Good | B |
59-50 | Good | C |
49-40 | Fair | D |
39-30 | Poor | E |
29-0 | Very poor | F |
The above is the national grading system in Nigerian Secondary Schools.

The above grading system is subject to review by the appropriate body under the purview of the Federal Ministry of Education.
