Ojei joined Rutam Motors Limited (a subsidiary of the Ibru Group) as a Sales Executive in 1973, just one year after finishing his OND. In 1976, he resigned from his position as a Sales Manager to start his own automotive service firm.

In March 1977, he began working with Unity Kapital Assurance Plc, where he eventually served as a director, and he made his first foray into the insurance market.

Due to Nuel Ojei’s growing commercial interests, he decided to form Nuel Ojei Holdings Limited (NOH) in 1989 in order to restructure and harmonize his different companies.
