Ojei was born in Lagos in 1951 and had his early schooling there before moving to Issele-Uku Technical College in Issele-Uku, Delta State, where he acquired an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Business Administration and Management between 1970 and 1972.


He holds an honorary doctorate degree from Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria.

How He Started His Business

Ojei joined Rutam Motors Limited (a subsidiary of the Ibru Group) as a Sales Executive in 1973, just one year after finishing his OND. In 1976, he resigned from his position as a Sales Manager to start his own automotive service firm.

In March 1977, he began working with Unity Kapital Assurance Plc, where he eventually served as a director, and he made his first foray into the insurance market.

Due to Nuel Ojei’s growing commercial interests, he decided to form Nuel Ojei Holdings Limited (NOH) in 1989 in order to restructure and harmonize his different companies.

After 30 years, NOH has grown into a colossus in Nigeria’s economic sector. One of the world’s largest conglomerates, it includes more than a dozen subsidiaries and affiliates that operate in a wide range of industries including banking and insurance; oil and gas; solid minerals; energy and telecom; among others.

His partnership with Mercedes Benz Servicing is another area of note. Weststar Associates Limited (the only representative of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria) signed an arrangement with NAD in November 2008 to run the approved Mercedes-Benz service center in Nigeria.

Through its decade-long involvement in the automobile industry, NAD has become a key participant in Nigeria’s transportation sector, contributing much to the country’s growth.

His Investment In Oil and Gas

The Emo Oil and Petrochemical Enterprise Limited (Emo) is another company making waves within the group (Emo Oil). Crude oil exploration, exploitation, and production; crude lifting; petroleum products import/export; consultation for gas and pipeline integrity projects are all carried out by the firm.
