The deadline for Nigerians to link their NIN to their SIM cards ended on March 31, 2022, after about eight postponements. And on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria, vowed to abide by the order of the Federal Government to bar outgoing calls of subscribers who were yet to link their National Identification Numbers with their SIM cards.
If you don’t want your SIM card to get blocked, here is the guide on how to link your NIN to your MTN line. This is very important following the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) directives to telecommunication operators in Nigeria to block SIM cards that are not connected with NIN.
To avoid blockage, MTN on its official Twitter page released a USSD code and URL on how their customers can easily link their line to their NIN as directed by the NCC.
If you’ve misplaced the printout of the NIN given to you by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), there is an alternative to getting your 11-digit NIN, at no cost.
How to check your NIN using USSD code
1. Dial *346# from the phone number associated with your voter’s card, driver’s licence, or BVN registration.
2. Press 1 to get your NIN
Note: It’s advisable to take a screenshot of the NIN before it disappears so that you don’t have to dial the code second time.
Your telecom provider charges N20 every time you dial *346#,
The good news…
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ibrahim Pantami said he directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission to remove the N20 USSD fee imposed on subscribers for National Identification Number retrieval requests.
How To Link NIN To Your MTN Line
MTN was the first to set the ball rolling in a tweet, where it stated that it can be done on a mobile phone, laptop or other data-enabled devices.
There are two methods to get this done on MTN:
- Via MTN-NIM Portal
- Via USSD Code
You need your First Name, Last Name, Middle Name, Phone Number, National Identity Number, and Email address to use the MTN online portal to connect your phone number with your NIN
Step 1: Copy and paste the official registration link https://mtnonline.com/nim/
Step 2: Fill in the requirements listed above
Step 3: Click on submit button
Step 4: An OTP will be sent to your MTN line
Step 5: Enter the OTP and click confirm
That’s all! You just link your MTN line to your NIN.
