If there were no data management policy by Nigeria’s government, its citizens wouldn’t have seen the need to register for the National Identity Number (NIN), a prelude to getting the National Identity Card. And lately, some people who haven’t registered want to know if the NIN registration has closed and if not, “where are the NIMC offices in Nigeria?”

First, NIN registration by NIMC has no official closing date, it’s a continuous registration because Nigeria continues to grow every year.

However, the government set December 2021, for Nigerians to link their NIN to their SIM cards, after postponing the closing date several times.

How many Nigerians have enrolled on NIN?

On October 30, 2021, data from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy revealed that 66,000,000 Nigerians have enrolled for National Identity Number (NIN).

And on November 18, 2021, the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission, Mr. Aliyu Aziz, stated that over 67 million Nigerians have been onboarded into Nigeria’s national identity database.

It’s important to note that there are some Nigerians who have got NIN more than five years ago, yet they were told that their National identity card wasn’t ready for collection, which calls for worry.

Even at that, NIMC through its DG said the commission is aiming to get 200,000,000 Nigerians on the national database, stating that Nigerians must have a digital identity wherever they go.

“We want to cover the whole 200 million. By the time we reach there, it may be over 200 million because we are multiplying quickly,” he was quoted as saying by The Punch.

NOTE:

The above state offices of NIMC are majorly for those who detected errors in their NIN printout and would like to make corrections. You can see our guide on how to apply for NIN correction of date of birth and correction of name. The enrollment process has been decentralised to make it easier and faster for Nigerians to be onboarded to the national database register.

The National Identity Management Commission is one of the agencies under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. NIMC is saddled with the mandate of establishing, operating, maintaining, and managing the National Identity Database of Nigerians
