NYSC Questions and Answers for PCMs

Every year nearly the same questions pop up about National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). In this post, we’ve collated various questions for fresh Nigerian graduates and provided answers as well.

We’ll be providing answers to all NYSC questions fresh Nigerian graduates or Prospective Corps Members ask whenever it’s time for mobilization.

Let’s get started…

What is the age limit for NYSC

The age limit for NYSC is 30-year. If you’re 30 before mobilisation it means you’re not qualified again. In that case, you can apply for NYSC exemption certificate.

Who established NYSC in Nigeria?

The government of Gen. Yakubu Gowon established the youth service scheme by decree 24 on May 22, 1973. The scheme has been a model to some African countries. It was established to foster national integration among Nigerian youths.

What is an exemption certificate?

NYSC Exemption Certificate is a special letter that is issued by the management of the National Youth Service Corps to Nigerian graduates who are willing to serve their fatherland but are above 30 years old. Exemption certificate carries the seal of the NYSC and shows that you’re above 30 at the time your course mates are being mobilized.

Is NYSC compulsory in Nigeria?

NYSC is a mandatory one-year programme for all Nigerian graduates (foreign and home) who are not more than 30 years old at the time of mobilization.

Who is an Otondo?

A serving corps member who has just completed a 3-week orientation course is usually referred to as Otondo by their fellows who are “old” in the system. When he/she is fully accustomed to his/her place of primary assignment he/she is seen as a full corp member by a fellow member.
Fellow corps members call their “fresh fellow” otondo. It’s very rare to see someone who isn’t a serving corps member to call a corps member Otondo. Simply put, Otondo is a JJC corps member who has just been deployed.
