Request A Refund From CAC: 7 Key Details To Include In Your Email (Letter)

You landed on this page because you’re wrongly debited by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) via its payment platform remita, don’t be disturbed because you’re not alone there and this post will guide you on how to request a refund from CAC.

Who can request a refund from CAC?

Requesting a refund from the commission must be evidence-based, here is a list of people who can make such a request:

  • Those who are wrongly debited
  • Someone who made payment for a wrong issue
  • Someone who was debited because of a bad banking network
  • Someone who made multiple payments for the same issue

Cases of wrong debit by the CAC via remita

Here are some of the cases we received from our readers:

“Good morning, I did business name registration in 2020. I paid ₦17,000 through remita and subsequently got receipt of payment from remita but the message I received from CAC says, payment was unsuccessful. Please I wanted to apply for a Refund to do another registration”

Sample 2:

“I have over four cases of failed transactions, yet remita debited and my bank affirms funds remitted to CAC. Kindly let me know how I can apply for my refund”

Sample 3:

“Hello, I have been debited twice by remita while I received a message from CAC saying my payment was not successful. I’m tired, please is there a way I can get my money back?”

Since CAC completely moved its services online, it hasn’t been palatable for some applicants. Some of them were debited by remita while they received a message from the commission that their payment was unsuccessful.

We’ve seen close to 10 of such unsuccessful payment complaints on social media while we received close to 20 such complaints via our mail.

Now let’s get to the root of the matter. Some of the possible reasons you may get such an error include:

Fluctuating network in the process of making payment

The inability of the remita software to communicate with CAC. When this happens, your bank account would be debited by the payment channel while CAC would send a failure message because of poor communication between the commission and the payment channel.

Whatever the case is, the commission is aware of such a problem and the commission clearly states in its refund policy that:

“Where a customer is unable to use up any payment, it shall be refunded or the payment can be applied on another future transaction.”

CAC

Will the refund reflect on my CAC wallet?

The CAC refund policy is only possible if the commission makes a provision for the customer’s wallet within the CAC dashboard.

And at the time of this report, there was no provision for CAC wallet where customer’s error payment can be refunded. CAC has no wallet for a refund to be made.

However, a few months ago, the commission disclosed that it’s making plans to address the deficiency.

One of the major ways it planned to end the issue was to adopt a “customer electronic wallet on the Portal wherein any money to be refunded will be credited and from which payments can be made in subsequent transactions.”

So…

How can get a refund from CAC?

To get a refund from the commission, you have to submit a formal application. Conventional complaint filing is no longer in vogue, everything is done online.

To use the electronic complaint filing, include the following in your email:

Title: Request for a refund

In the body of your mail include the following details:

  • Your full name
  • Telephone number
  • Account number
  • Active email address
  • Remita Retrieval Reference (payment reference)
  • The service you paid for
  • Amount you paid
  • Time
  • Date of payment
  • Attach receipt of payment

And send to: cservice@cac.gov.ng and copy  audit@cac.gov.ng

An administrative charge of 5% shall apply where the reason for refund is as a result of the applicant’s fault. And ensure to attach all the receipts where there are multiple payments in a transaction.

That’s how to get a refund from CAC!

And if your case is resolving a query on your application, kindly find our guide  to resolve it.

Conclusion:

CAC can only honour your refund application if it can confirm the authenticity of the documents you provided. The process may take several weeks to process.

To avoid cases of erroneous debit, ensure that your internet connection is good when making online transactions.
