The history of music groups will not be complete without mentioning one of the best RnB groups ever to hit the limelight the trio of Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme and Tunde Akinsanmi popularly called Styl Plus.
The pioneer members were Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi, and Lanre Faneyi, the name STYL being an abbreviation of the founders first names. In 1998 Lanre Faneyi died, and Zeal Onyecheme joined the group.
Their advent into the music industry in 2002 was sensational and a new dawn for music lovers because they brought the African feel of Westlife also a popular group of five known globally.
Styl plus had breathtaking singles like Olufunmi and Runaway which were raves of the moment and a delight in every sense of the word.
With these aforementioned smash singles they were heralding major shows and getting massive airplay which made them set the music scene agog.
However, being popular is easy but staying in the limelight is quite herculean and the break up syndrome became their lot.
After the success of their debut album , the sophomore album was below expectation and fans were disappointed.
There were reports that there were some irreconcilable differences that led to the breakup and they could not hold firmly anymore.
Tunde was the first to launch his solo career with his single’kinimolese’ while the group is now made up of just the duo of Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme.
The ‘OLUFUNMI’ progenitors are greatly missed because they have written their names in the annals as one of the best music groups ever in the music scene because they were extremely talented.
Listening to their music and hit songs creates this nostalgic feeling when the group brought to fore their A-game and got all the applause they wanted but whatever must have caused their break up is best known to them. It is indeed disheartening how virtually all the major music groups in Nigeria have parted ways and their vacuum has never being filled.
