NIS Contactless Passport Begins November 1, Here Is How To Renew Your Passport From Home

Beginning today, November 1, 2024, Nigerians who reside in Canada will be able to renew their Nigerian passport from the comfort of their homes using the newly launched contactless passport system.

According to a release from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the contactless passport renewal, which is in three phases, is to eliminate the issue of bribery and corruption among some of its officials.

Canada which is phase 1 begins on November 1, 2024; the United Kingdom, United States, Italy are in phase 2 and they can start using the contactless application system from November 15, 2024, while Nigeria and the rest of the world are in phase 3, beginning from December 1, 2024, the statement reads.

NIS noted that the contactless passport system is designed for passport renewal while fresh applications are to follow the usual process which is online.

In case your passport has expired and you are planning to renew, here is the step-by-step process to get it done without having to visit any NIS office:

1) Visit Google Playstore or Apple Store on iOS and check for Nigeria Immigration Service Passport App and download it or visit the Nigerian passport portal on your web browser

2) Create a profile using a valid email address

3) Complete eligibility test

4) Input your NIN and your current passport number

5) Fill out your biodata and upload relevant documents such as your NIN slip, birth certificate, your LGA certificate of origin etc

6) Take your biometric , using your mobile phone finger print

7) Review all your information

8) When you are satisfied that the info you entered is correct, then proceed to make payment

9) And finally, submit your application

10) Wait for your passport to be ready and delivered to your chosen address
