General Abdulsalami Abubakar was the last military Head of State before the Fourth Republic. He was the Chief of Defence Staff during Abacha’s regime

He did what his predecessors (Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha) were unable to do by handling over to the democratically elected president.

Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed office on June 9, 1998, after the death of General Sani Abacha on June 8, 1998.
