An undisclosed number of staff members of the United Bank of Africa (UBA) has been sacked by the management of the financial institution.

A source said more than 5, 000 workers were affected by the sacking across UBA branches in Nigeria.

InfomedianG gathered that the unlucky sacked workers had in December 2019 received threatening messages to either leave or be laid off.

Source:

“In my branch, two people were affected by the new development. But the good thing is that more people were employed.

“Most of the new employees are much younger. While those who were laid off had spent between 5 years to 15 years with the bank.

“It was well planned so as to reduce the rate of public outcry, as the sacking was ongoing, UBA brought on board new workers, that’s why the news about employment and new salary scale overrides the sacking news” an anonymous employee of UBA said.

Is it the first time UBA will be carrying out massive sacking?

In the past, UBA downsized, but none is massive as the recent one. In 2018, the same bank laid off several of its workers.

Among them was a cashier who had spent 16 years without a promotion throughout his stay.

Some of those who were swept by the 2018 cleansing according to naijacentre.com include Ephraim Eleshi, Innocent Nweke, Amaechi Edeh, Leonard Nweke, Patrick Nwosisi, Chukwuma Eze, Fabian Nebo, Ngozi Eze, Ozioma Ezenwoye, and Patrick Madueke.

Confirmation from UBA

There is no official statement about the sacking, however, there are several reports on online that the bank employed more than 4, 000 new staff members to strengthen the efficiency of the bank.

UBA in an official statement also confirmed the employment of more than 4, 000 new staff and promotion of more than 5, 000 of its existing workers.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Group, Kennedy Uzoka said in a statement that “We take great pride in being a listening bank that has the ears of our employees as they turn the wheels which make the organisation successful for our customers and shareholders.

“UBA recruits highly talented staff who perform at the best standards and deserve to be remunerated accordingly”

“We have also taken steps to ensure that our bank remains at the top tier as it relates to talent pool.

“We want to train the best and we have crashed the grade structure to make it easier and faster for our employees to progress along their careers.

Implication

With this new grade structure, it will be possible for a new graduate employed at UBA to rapidly chart their own careers and become GMD by the age of 36.”
