Starlink is a satellite-based internet constellation that provides internet access to 47 countries around the world (at the time of publication). The satellite-based internet service is operated by SpaceX, a company owned by American billionaire Elon Musk. The launch of Starlink began in 2019 with its small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), that communicate with designated ground transceivers.

Launch of Starlink on a mobile phone

On February 6, 2024, the satellite internet constellation was launched on mobile phones on the A321 aircraft for Hawaiian Airlines. This means guests on the company’s A321 fleet can enjoy free, fast internet on select transpacific flights right on the go.

Number of subscribers on Starlink network

As of May 2024, Starlink says it has more than 3 Million subscribers on its network globally.

Launch of Starlink around the world

North America is the first continent where SpaceX Starlink was launched in August 2020, the United States being the first country to connect with the product.

The United Kingdom (UK) is the first country in Europe where Startlink was launched in January 2021 while New Zealand is the first in Oceania.

In the South American continent, Chile is the first while Iran is the first to enjoy Starlink in Asia in September 2022.

Nigeria is the first African country to enjoy Starlink internet connection which debuted on January 30, 2023.

However, the SpaceX founder hinted that Nigeria (A west African country) and Mozambique (a Southern African country) got the approval the same day.

Here are the countries where Starlink are available:

1. United States

On October 27, 2020, Starlink went live in the United States with emails sent out to those who had earlier shown interest in the satellite internet service. It was called the “Better Than Nothing” beta for the first set of users in the U.S.

One of those who received the email confirmed it through a screenshot he excitedly shared it on reddit, “I just officially received an email invite to the Starlink beta.”

“As you can tell from the title, we are trying to lower your initial expectations.”

Expect to see data speeds vary from 50Mbps to 150Mbps and latency from 20ms to 40ms over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.

As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations, and improve our networking software, data speed, latency, and uptime will improve dramatically. For latency, we expect to achieve 16ms to 19ms by summer 2021.

The Starlink phased-array user terminal, which is more advanced than what’s in fighter jets, plus mounting tripod and Wi-Fi router, costs $499 and the monthly subscription costs $99.

If this sounds good to you, then order here.

Thanks,

Starlink Team

This means terrestrial internet providers like BT Group and traditional satellite companies such as OneWeb have to step up their game to retain their existing customers.

The unique selling point of Starlink where it is available is the download speed, though quite expensive.

Satellite-based internet provider Starlink started rolling out in Germany on the night of March 9, 2021.

Space editor at Ars Technica and the author of Liftoff: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX, Eric Berger, tweeted:

“In advance of this evening’s planned launch, SpaceX says it is beginning Starlink service in Germany and New Zealand this week, and will expand its existing service in the UK.”

5. New Zealand

The first Starlink internet speed test went live in New Zealand in March 2021 with a download speed as high as 148 megabits per second.

As against their traditional internet connection which offers download speeds of 19 50Mbps, Starlink New Zealand is super fast, says 9 and 3 YouTube channel that posted on video installation guide.

6. Australia

With the official public update about the availability of Starlink in Australia on March 29, 2021, it was obvious that Aussie who could afford the satellite-based internet provider would have added another option to the existing ones.

  • Hardware: 924 AUD
  • Monthly subscription: 139 AUD

  • Hardware: €499 reduced to €450
  • Monthly subscription: €99 but now €50
