Tony Elumelu Foundation 2021 application portal will open January 1, 2020, organisers of the programme has said.
Applications are made through TEFConnect, the digital networking hub for the African entrepreneurship ecosystem, created by the foundation.
Sponsored by one of Africa’s biggest philanthropists Tony Elumelu, TEF Entrepreneurship Programme is open to entrepreneurs from across Africa while there are also other funding for business owners in Nigeria.
It welcomes applications from either with new startup ideas or existing businesses of less than three years existence, operating in any sector.
In 2021 as usual, successful applicants will join the over 9,000 current beneficiaries, from 54 African countries, and receive business training, mentoring, a non-refundable $5,000 of seed capital and global networking opportunities.
In 2019, the foundation received about 216,000 applications, with 42 per cent coming from women entrepreneurs, from across African countries.
TEF is a 10-year, $100 million commitment to identify, train, mentor and fund 10,000 young African entrepreneurs.
Goal of TEF
It is to create millions of jobs and the revenue required for the sustainable development of the continent, implementing the philosophy of Africapitalism, which positions the private sector as the growth engine for Africa and emphasises the importance of creating social and economic wealth.
According to the foundation’s 2018 Impact Report, 70 per cent of the total number of businesses in its alumni network were still operational two years after benefitting from the Programme.
The report also identified an increase of 189 per cent revenue generated and 197 per cent increase in the number of additional jobs created by beneficiaries post-graduation from the Programme, as well as a 100 per cent commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.

What if my business is not yet registered, can I still apply?
Registration isn’t a criterion for applying for TEF Entrepreneurship Programme, and it’s not clearly stated if your business should be registered
However, it could be an advantage for someone with business registration certificate coupled with brilliant ideas to help achieve some of the objectives of the programme.
We have some individuals who have brilliant ideas and have the zeal to take it to the next level, but large number of this group of people are incapacitated by takeoff capital.
Do you know that your business ideas could be more brilliant than some people out there whose businesses are registered?
So if you business has started, but yet to register, you can register for the programme, and go-ahead to get your business registered while screening is ongoing.
Note that shortlisting of applicants largely depend on their brilliant ideas cutting across African countries.
In the financial section, should it be in dollars or in our local currency?
It should be in your local currency; if you’re in Nigerian for instance if you entered 50,000 it is believed to be N50, 000
I’m having issues submitting my application, please how can I go about it?
Refresh the page. Or log out, then clear cache of your browser. To clear the cache on laptop or desktop, press shift+ctrl and del buttons and click “Clear Now” Enter the application page again to submit your form.
It could also mean that application is overwhelmed (huge traffic), wait for some minutes and check back again.
Also, make sure you have a strong internet connection to get better user experience.
How do I know if I’m selected?
You will be contacted. Check your email frequently (check your spam folder or junk folder), and follow the social media channels of TEF Programme.
Is there an age limit for TEF programme?
There is no age limit stated in the application form. But the minimum age limit of 18 could apply?
Aside from that, all you need is a brilliant idea that could help create jobs for Africans.
What’s the duration for Tony Elumelu Foundation for African entrepreneurs?
I can’t get anything related to age limit on the application portal, however, I’ve seen previous applicants say it’s 9 months. I can’t authoritatively confirm this.
How and where do I upload company documents on the application?
At the time I applied, there’s no provision for uploading of company documents, and I don’t think there is since it’s opened for whose businesses are registered and those who are at the developmental stage.
Can two or more business partners apply?
Yes, if your partnership is clearly spelt out.
I cannot fill the financial section, please what can I do?
Refresh the page.
What do they mean by the referee in the last section?
Those who can attest to your character and capacity could be your former boss and others who can vouch for you.
How to edit submission after posting?
You can edit saved application form, but a submitted application cannot be edited again. Please check your application to make the necessary correction before final submission, once you click submit, that’s the final, you can’t edit it again.
Can one apply multiple times using different projects?
Multiple applications aren’t allowed thought that’s not clearly stated. But consider focusing on one project at a time in order to achieve the best. Channel your energy on a business at a time, when you achieve success in one, you can begin a new one.
After submitting what is the next step and why is it not showing successful?
You should see “Application Completed” after hitting the submission button, alternatively check your inbox.
I’m also receiving the stop sign with the message that I have to be older than 18, I am 27, what should I do?
