The Presiding Bishop of Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has berated the House of Senate of the National Assembly over the lawmakers’ plan to criminalise hate speech.
The outspoken man of God was speaking on Tuesday night at the opening ceremony of the annual gathering of the Church, Shiloh 2019.
Oyedepo described the bill as a crazy idea.
“They are not hanging killers, they want to hang people for hate speech,” he said.
He wondered why Nigerians should not be free to speak if things are not going well in the country.
Oyedepo wondered why Nigerians would not speak if things are not going well in the country like the state of the roads, people should be able to say so without been unnecessarily threatened.
He said nobody can stop him from speaking his mind as a prophet of God.
“You say something truthful about them and they call it is hate speech? You can’t silence a man of God because he is called by God
“A prophet is answerable to God only, what God tells him he will say. You cannot stand for God and be a loser
“I don’t know if anyone loves Nigeria more than I do. Imagine they are not hanging killers, they want to hang ‘hate speakers?
“ Anyways that is dead already if the wicked will not stop his wickedness God will stop his wickedness
“What God tells me to say, I will say it,” he stated.
He declared that the bill is dead and will not see the light of the day.
The hate speech received public condemnation since its introduction before the National Assembly.
A few minutes ago, the United States government through its Political Officer of Embassy in Nigeria declared support for the bill describing media reports as misleading.
